MSSQL is unavailable to me at this time. Can anyone tell me the performance problems I might expect using Access db and are there future plans for converting this to MySQL?

Problems with Access are that it is slower, but not immediatly aparent, only slows down when you have a few hundred users and a few MB's of MDB filesize.

As for MySQL, there's no plans to add a MySQL backend version of WWF because, see this post by me sometime ago: www.webwiz.net/wwf_forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7730

I have decided that coding a new forum system from scratch would be a waste of time, there's already many good forums out there, and I would be only wasting my time.

I currently have the Access version running. The db is over 50 meg, 2,000+ registered users, average 170 new posts / day and most forum pages still load in well under 1 second. Searchs take longer of course, anywhere from 1-10 seconds depending on the search.

If you think you'll have a high traffic site I'd go with MS SQL, but if not the Access version works fine.

The speed that access runs at depends allot on the server you site is on.

On fast servers with allot of memory and not allot of sites you can get away with over 100mb Access database.

But as most hosts tend to pack to many sites onto a server, allot of web hosts will not allow databases over 10Mb in size, and there are a few I know (Fasthosts is one) who will suspend your account without warning if you have an access database over 10mb.

So it's worth checking with your hosts first.

If they haven't noticed yet then OK, but be prepared to wake up one morning to find your site not there with a suspension email telling you to upgrade to MS SQL Server at a cost of £300 per year + the VAT!!

They have done this 3 times now to sites I have placed on their servers.

Not entirly sure how they stand now with the Win 2003 servers as it's the abuse department (who you can not talk to) that deals with this type of thing and the technical support guys don't have a clue on these matters.

I try not to use Fasthosts anymore apart from for the odd small site on a reseller account I have as the service is lousy and they try and get extra money out of you for everything.
