 Topic: How much space needed for database?

I appreciate this is like asking how long is a piece of string, but approximately how large will the access database file grow on a medium sized website? I ask because I have 50Meg, and I'm unsure how many messages (minus image hosting) might be posted before it starts to get a bit full! Has anyone else had problems with their forum growing too fast, and can the database be stored on another server from the forum code?

I foud a ruff average is aound 1MB for each 1000 messages posted.
But beaware that access is a flat file database system and as such
performance will detertiate the larger the file size. Most hosts will
have a round a 10 to 20Mb limit on Access file sizes.
For large sites you should really look at MS SQL Server, yoi can get
some very cheap hosting options these days with support for MS SQL
server 2000.

You may want to pull your access db offline and do a compact & repair.

Hi Borg, thanks for info, I appreciate it.
I found a cheap hosting service, but to upgrade to a MS SQL server it's £380 / year!!  Hopefully with mine being a smallish site, I will not run into such problems. I can always archive if it becomes the case.

380 a year is many times to much. Time to find another host. There are many good ones offering MS SQL for 20-30% of that cost.

Exactly, but most probably, as u said you gota a small site, you wont need MS Sql, i dont know why i feel that MS Access DB will work for you :)

dpyers - I presume compacting will cause no problems once it is uploaded again? Thanks for the tip.
Michael, I suppose Web Wiz is the obviously first port of call - certainly looks good to me, and a fair sight cheaper!
