Hi Bruce
I was editing the navigation_buttons_inc.asp to tabulize the top navigation and when i was done and tried the file there was a thing, a "%>" tag was being shown on page as below

Looks like you may have an extra %> in the file.

Check that you don't have any extra %> tags that shouldn't be there.

I tried but failed...although there was an extra tag around settings button and when deleted the other tag showing after settings link disappeared but this one is going no where

tried that....even replaced header with the original header file...didnt work

Try using an editor like UtraEdit, if you place the cursor over the start tag <% it will also highlight the close of the tag.

This would hopefully help you find the extra %> that isn't required.
