Google takes aim at Microsoft with new Web browser

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Google will begin distributing its own browser in a move likely to heat up its rivalry with Microsoft.

The Internet search leader confirmed the long-rumored browser in a Monday posting on its Web site. Google said the free browser, called "Chrome," will be available for downloading Tuesday.

The browser represents Google Inc.'s latest challenge to Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer is used by nearly 75 percent of Web surfers. Google has been concerned that Microsoft will try to program Internet Explorer in a way that makes it more difficult for Google's search engine to attract traffic.

Tried it. A little too minimalist. I like my FF addons and a drop-down address bar list

With the way google shares info with advertisers, using Chrom is like giving your PC to Doubleclick.

I think it's great! Very fast and the tabs are neat.

dpyers - Would you rather use IE (Microsoft) over Chrome (Google)... as far as privacy/ads are concerned? Which one of the two is less evil, Google or Microsoft? I personally think Google are less evil than Micrososft. I don't think Google's intentions are to expose your info to advertisers... because that would make their browser a spyware.

Google Chrome appears to be based on Apples open source webkit, which means the same rendering engine as Safari 3.1

It identifies itself as:-

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.2.149.27 Safari/525.13

This would mean that it is Apple Safari 3.1 with same user agent just with the Chrome/0.2.149.27 added in.

The browser engine even functions in the same way, with the same issues and bugs as Safari 3.1

By the way Rich text Editing support is currently being tested on this forum for Safari as Google Chrome uses the same engine it also now has Rich text Editing support in this forum.

I normally use IE as I deal with Microsoft-based products for work / school. I also go to sites that use activeX plugins sometimes. Otherwise I'd be sticking to Firefox... I do not like Safari that much...

Being open source, they wouldnt be able to do that would that? as it would be spotted by someone?

Also, it is Safari, as googles help files say something like "if your sites work in safari, they will work in google chrome"
