Topic: FTP Hassles Posted: 11 March 2003 at 1:02am |
Hi there,
I hope i have put this in the right place. I am having some trouble with FTP - i have recently renovate a site (including adding a web wiz forum ) and uploaded it to a test directory. Now, i need to rename the live site directory from live to old (or something like that) and rename the new site directory to live (or something like that). The problem is, i get access denied errors (error 550 in FTP i think) when i try to rename either of those two directories to anything, and yet, i can rename other less significant directories.
What do i need to do? Is there something i need to do with my web services, or something else i should know about FTP and directory renames? I am completely lost!
Thanks in advance for any help,
Regards, Steve

What program are you using? Sometimes the permissions won't let you rename or delete any folders that have subfolders or other content in it. Maybe you can create a new folder named "OldSite" and move all the contents to that folder.

Hi WebMonkey,
I am using CuteFTP. The problem is trying to use anything else is a huge pain in the butt as the FTP program is installed on our server, and it seems to be the only machine that the proxy will let FTP traffic pass through. I could do the move copy thing, but the problem is its the primary directory for the whole site, and hence will take the site offline for too long. Can you recommend any good FTP programs?
Many Thanks, Steve

Well, an update:
I decided to do some manual shifting around, and that went well except for the fact that when you delete certain directories, they dont actually dissappear, but just get access denied errors when you try then to open them, like they have been half deleted. Whats worse is one of those directories is one i need to recreate, and i cant cause it thinks its still there, but at the same time, wont let me in it. It seems to suggest that the permissions are ok for full access.
Please Help!!!
Thanks, Steve

Steve,
I've had that problem with CuteFTP before, and that is why I don't use it. I currently use Dreamweaver MX's internal FTP and have had no problems with it.
I have tried FlashFXP www.flashfxp.com in the past and it seemed to be a pretty full functioned FTP program.

Try to access the site with another FTP program, and you may find that you can rename/move/delete the files that you previously couldn't.
