Their IM is built on Jabber. Apparently there's some concern about how
the open source license is being interpreted and used by google. Google
gets away with things that would put MS into court for years.

Jabber programs do not have to be open source  Or maybe I am wrong. I thought only the protocol was open

Yes, only the protocol is open, but google are being critised for using
LAMP technology (Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP, Python, Perl) but not
submitted revisions back to the source tree.

I think google may have been dicking with the protocol as well.
It was one of those long technical rant articles so I skimmed a lot

Forget where I saw the article - it was either lockergnome, eweek, developers journal, or info week.
