email not working correctly?

Hello, i'm having a problem with the email in WWF.
no verification emails are going out, and the forgot password doesn't work
If i login to the admin area my email settings are:
 
email system: AspEmail
smtp: (the ip of the server)
I have the rest blank
 
If i click the "test email" it works fine, but if i go out into the forum and try the forgot password or any other functions i get the:

Server Error Message:-
Persits.MailSender.4
Connection refused.
 
I've tried to switch the settings to localhost and 127.0.0.1, then it fails on the admin email test and the forgot password.
 
I also tried switching to cdosys with no luck. any ideas?
 
we are still running version 9.55. I haven't updated because we've made so many changes and added things to the login.

According to the Persists website the error you are getting emans:-

Unfortunately if you are running your mail server on a port other than port 25 you would need to either edit the forum code or upgrade to version 10 which allows you to set the in the admin area the SMTP port.

Version 9.55 is many years old now and if memory serves me right the way emails are sent had a bit of an overhaul since then.

Version 9.74 is available on the download page if you did not want to upgrade to version 10 at this time.
