Well, excluding the fact that I lost all my data by not being able to import my Access db to the SQL server (although spending a full day trying to), I'm very very very pleased by the SQL version of the forum. It's fast, it has more features and it's working like a swiss clock.

The probably dumb question is: will the forum start getting slower after the number of messages and users grows a lot, just like the Access one? And why is the SQL version better regarding this problem?

The forum on this site is at over 55,000 posts and not showing signs of slowing.

The reason for this is that MS Access is a flat file, this means every time  the database is connected to the entire file with all it's tables etc. need to be loaded into memory. MS SQL Server works differently, it's a server so doesn't have the flat file system of Access. This means that when the database is connected to the entire database does not need to be loaded into memory.

Another advantage of SQL Server is that the SQL Server is usually located on a different server to the web server allowing each server to do a dedicated job.
