I've setup the forum using SQL Express. Everything works fine except deleting a post?! I get this...

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'

Could not find server 'MYSQLSERVER_NAME\SQLEXPRESS'in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers.

/forum/delete_post.asp, line 185

do I need to add my local sql server as a linked server? bit unsure if this is the real prob or its a permissions issue?

Thanks for any help!

I had this problem before and it took many hours of looking through sites on Google to find the problem.

This error can occur if you change the name of your computer, SQL Server 2005 can hold the old name still and thus get the permissions error you mention when running things like delete commands on the database.

I did finally after many hours of searching found a solution, but it didn't work very well, it involved calling the sp_addlinkedserver stored procedure with a command to link the new computer name.

However, I still had issues and finally sorted it by uninstalling SQL Server and then reinstalling it.

Thanks for the reply..I'll try the linked server route first to see if that works otherwise it may have to be a reinstall!

Cheers

If you do reinstall then you can keep your existing database.

With SQL Server 2005 you can detach and attach database from SQL Server 2005 so you can make a backup of the actual database files.
