CDO 1.x - Requires Exchange/Outlook
CDONTS - Only requires Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003
CDOSYS - Only requires Windows 2000/XP/2003
CDO 2.0 - Same as CDOSYS
CDOEX - Requires Exchange
CDOEXM - Requires Exchange
CDO 3.0 - Same as CDOEX

does this mean the forum email will not work because
exchange use CDOEX ?

Well, do you have IIS SMTP server installed? If so, the list above applies to it.

You can still run the Exchange SMTP server at the same time, simply change IIS SMTP port to 26 and they both will work fine.

once exchange server is installed, STMP is no longer part of the IIS 6.0 but is under exchange server.  the STMP is no longer listed in the IIS 6.0 but it is listed on the exchange server manger. from what i read, app will use CODEX and not the CODOSYS. i just want to make sure this is correct and if anybody know a workaround.

Strange, Exchange hijacks IIS SMTP server?

Don't Exchange has it's own SMTP server? Say you don't install IIS or the SMTP server, and you just want a dedicated mail server with Exchange, don't it install it's own SMTP server?

If it doens't what kind of e-mail server is that, and if it does, so why does it has to hijack IIS own SMTP server?

I use Rockliffe MailSite e-mail server (www.rockliffe.com), awsome package, all your needs are met, very secure, lots of functionality, they even supply you with a webmail ASP application so you can integrate into your site to check all your mail boxes, and all that cheaper than Exchange.
