Hi

After a month of development I have completed my own forum site, only to find you can dowload a much better one ... FOR FREE!!

My site has been fairly successful over the last 2 month gaining 900+ members, but it proving a pain to manage!  I would very much like to migrate into the WWF as it has much better database managment tools.

Has anyone written any migration tools especially around the member migration accomodating encryption stuff!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

JR

Rudster,

I did just the same: developed a forum software and then bumped into WWF -- and gave up developing anything else... :-)

Check out this thread, one of the most useful for you to migrate your users. Read it all, for boRg explains how the encryption thing works in WWF.

And good luck, man.

See you,
Emiliano.

Thanks for your response!

I actually wrote the site myself from scratch using ASP with an Access database.

http://www.sportsregister.co.uk

So really I'm looking for a tool that can upload a CSV file.

Hmmm ... it maybe that migration tools have already been written for another forum that I can adapt?

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers ... JR

Hi All

If anybody is interested!  Ouch

Just to let you know I have finished migrating my site to WWF.

I did most of the migration of my Access database by manipulating the data in Excel.  Fiddlie, but it was easy than writing a migration tool.

Took me about 6 hours to migrate 1,200 users, 4 categories, 98 forums and 1,700 posts (including dev time).

Users - I had to create unique ID's using the firstname and the first letter of their surnames (previously, the key was email address).  I had to change duplicates manually.  Then I uploaded them using my mass upload pages http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=11848
to http://www.sportsregister.co.uk/members.asp

Categories - Manually created

Forums - stored as 2 table in previous version County and Town took the counties as the forum name and concatenated the towns as the description e.g.
http://www.sportsregister.co.uk/forum_topics.asp?FID=9

Posts - The posts where made up by  amalgamating the data I already had across 4 tables (Sport, Town, County, User) and linked into the user id rather than email e.g. http://www.sportsregister.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=1497&PN=1

I then changed the mass email page to reset the passwords of all my members and email them.

... then HEY-PRESTO we have go-live!  Clap

UNFORTUNATELY, I am getting load of people joining the forum, but not many people are posting.  I think this is due to the migrated posts looking a bit too uniform rather than friendly?  Cry

Oh well, early days yet ... if anybody has some suggestions/criticisms I would be grateful!

Cheers ...

JR
