The problem is only with 2003 servers and only when you are using access database files for your site. The connection to the database uses the 'jet database engine' which is where the problem is.
When a few people connect to a site on the server which is using the above method, the server stops serving asp pages, it continues to serve html but not asp on any site on the server. Nothing appears in event viewer and there are no other signs that anything is wrong (was a head scratcher as I monitor everything with snmp)
I gave in and rang Microsoft (the only way to get the hotfix for this issue) they give you a temporary download link to a zip file which is password protected (the password expires in 7 days)
Ive installed it and all looks rosy now, Ive had heavy load on the server and it stood the test.
Here the MS KB article on the subject
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;8383 06

The patch is free but you got to ring in person, you have to quote the KB number (838306) so they know which patch to give you

If anyone does not want to ring Microsoft I will email you the patch
I'm too nice.

Hello sledge1211,
Do you still have access to these patch files for the Windows 2003 server?  I would be sincerely grateful if you can email them to me at support - at - hostw3.com.  Thank you very much.

Can you email it to me as well? I'll post it for download if anyone needs it until MS posts it publicly.

xeerex (at) gmail (dot) com is fine.

So this is what was briging down my sites a few moths back when I used some with Access backend? There was no event logs, no errors or anything to point to a problem, all sites on the same app pool would just stop, humm I though, for a time I considered going back to W2K, but II6 is just that much more advanced.

Well, I moved all my sites to MSSQL so I don't really need the patch, but it's good to know what was causing the problem.

It would have cost us £120 to phone microsoft and get that patch, so if you could email it to me, it would be primo:

Hello Antaris,

If you mention Microsoft KB number (838306) you will not get charged, they don't even ask you for a credit card.  No one can email you the patch because the password expires 7 days after you receive it.  Here's the number we called (888) 456-5570.  Good luck.
