Hi guys

I was just wondering if your hoster supported Oracle 10g databases for free, would you be interested in actually developing software/websites using or simply learning it to supplement your existing skills? Or if you were on a reseller package and had the opportunity to sell Oracle 10g services, would you go for it?

thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks
Yash

This is definately not a person version we plan to install :) Used by some of the largest corporations out there. What I wanted to know was how would it fair with developers and small businesses as opposed to SQL Server.

I haven't really used oracle much, but I use SQL Server all the time... I prefer SQL Server

SQL Server is a good database but I never ever would use it on a shared hosting plan. Oracle shines in having big databases and will not really give you a huge benefit on some lousy 150MB database. On top of that without having more access to Oracle so you can deply your J2EE developed procedures etc. it would not make much more sense. Lastly, if you staff has little or no experience, let it go, it can become a nightmare to support if you do not know the product very well.

I am not referring to the benfits. Definately, there are no major benefits of Oracle over SQL Server for smaller websites and forums. Same way there are no major benefits of SQL Server over MySQL for personal sites (even though SQL Server is much more powerful).

My main question is that if Oracle was available at low prices, would it encourage you to use or experiment with it. We have Oracle DBAs and I never said we plan to introduce it :) Just a question

I run oracle locally, but it's more just to keep my hand in PL/SQL and test out some features. I work with corporates who use it though, so need to keep up to speed.

IMHO, some versions of it haven't had good performance with smaller data bases - other versions optimized well for small db's. Seems to vary from release to release. I have used it for large web db's and have been pleased with the performance and some of the oo features.

Michael's point about shared hosting is a good one though. There's a different set of issues around db's in a shared hosting environment than what are faced with dedicated servers. The body of knowledge that constitutes best practices for Oracle shared hosting isn't as widely known as that for other DB's.

No I wouldn't use it, SQL Server is 100% fine for what I develop.

If Oracle was available at low prices (in conjuction with MSSQL on the same package), I would definitely go for it just to play with it a bit out of curiosity, I would also run tests btw Oracle and MSSQL just to see how they difer, even thou I never touched the stuff before.

If you have Oracle DBA's at close range, I think it would add value and features to your service.

My own server has MSSQL and MySQL that I use alot and btw them all my DB needs are met, however, if I could get my hands on Oracle and a DBA or two I would go for it, at least for six months trialing it to measure acceptance and other issues.
