We have been using the Forum now for some time and have found it wonderful for holding and great deal of information. The problem I have is that the search mechanism does not seem to work very well. Can I employ and Google search in my forum? I am running 8.04Smile

You would need to ask Google about their search, but there is no reason why you can not use it with your forum.

However, the search in the forum is very good and accurate and most people have no problem with it.

There have been improvements with the search in version 9.x so you may want to upgrade.

Upgrading is fairly easy.

Download the latest free express edition and inside that you will find database upgrade tools and instructions on how to use them.

You may need to tweak colors and/or a few settings after the conversion, since somethings are different. And if you've made any modifications to code or the style sheets, put them back in, but otherwise, it's pretty painless and quick.

You can go to google.com and search for terms on any specific site. Below is our own example:

rambler site:theamcforum.com

That searches for the word "rambler" on our site - theamcforum.com
Interesting - I learned something. Since www.theamcforum.com ALSO points to our site, but it rarely used, it only got 2 pages of results where using the more common theamcforum.com got several pages of results!
I like the built-in search just fine and it works great. But if some are hooked on google, the above example will work. Put in the key word or words, then site:  followed immediately by the site name.

For Altavista, you'd do   host:theamcforum.com rambler

Most search engines have code that allow you to put a search box on your site that uses their engine.

I think I have just found what we may be doing wrong. I never paid much attention to the search settings. I just noticed that it only searches the last 6 months by default. How do I re configure the default settings of the search mechanism so it always searches all dates.
